EPA: 12.97M cellulosic D3 RINs generated in July, 1.28B D6 RINs

2015/08/08

The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for July, reporting that more than 1.59 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 13 million cellulosic RINs. That compares with 1.56 billion RINs generated in June.

Cellulosic biofuel in July, at 12.97 million RINs, was up from 12.41 million RINs reported in June and between 8 and 9 million RINs reported each month between February and May. For the first seven months of 2015, 62.29 million D3 RINs have been generated, of which 1.3 million are from cellulosic ethanol, 34.9 million from renewable CNG and 26.2 million from renewable LNG. Domestically generated D3 RINs total 55.7 million, while another 6.8 million RINs were generated by importers.

RINs generation for D6 renewable biofuel, which is dominantly corn ethanol, at 1.278 billion RINs in July was up slightly from June’s 1.273 billion, and the most generated in a single month during 2015. For the year to date, after error corrections, there have been 8.54 billion D6 RINs generated, of which 8.29 billion were generated domestically, with another 60.5 million generated by importers and 195.1 million reported as foreign generation. D6 RINs are overwhelming ethanol at 8.3 billion to date; 59 million are from biodiesel and 195 million from nonester renewable diesel.

The 5.37 million D5 RINs generated in July for advanced biofuel is slightly higher than the 4.8 million generated in each of the previous two months. D5 RINs generation for the year to date totals 44.97 million, of which 24.96 million are for ethanol; 14.2 million, naptha; 423,000 heating oil; 5.4 million, nonester renewable diesel and 3,554, renewable CNG. Of the D5 RINs generated this year, 34.8 million were generated domestically and 10.7 million generated by importers.

July’s total for D4 biomass-based diesel RINs was 294.3 million. The total generated to date in D4 RINs is 1.52 billion, with 1.2 billion coming from biodiesel, 322 million from nonester renewable diesel and 3,500 from renewable CNG. Of those, 1.23 billion RINs were generated domestically, 153.6 million generated by importers and 140.5 million from foreign generation.

No D7 RINs were generated in July for cellulosic diesel. All 174,000 RINs for 2015 were generated by importers in May, all for cellulosic heating oil.

Data published by the EPA indicates 10.17 billion RINs were generated during the first seven months of the year, with 385.8 million retired, 347 million locked and available, and 9.44 billion unlocked and available.
